Google will begin removing access to Google Assistant on Android phones, tablets, and paired devices such as Wear OS smartwatches, headphones, and Android Auto–connected cars starting September 4, 2026. Devices in regions where Gemini is available that meet minimum requirements will default to the AI-powered assistant. Google Home and Google TV devices are not affected by this announcement, and cars with Google built-in retain Assistant access for now. The removal follows an earlier plan, delayed from 2025, to end Assistant on most mobile devices, and Google reportedly communicated the September timeline in an email sent to some users. The Verge has asked Google to confirm the email's accuracy. This marks another instance of Google retiring a product, commonly categorized under its so-called Google Graveyard, and may require users to switch to or rely solely on Gemini across their mobile and paired devices.
